Problem
Bruvi® is a a beautiful coffee brewer that aims to deliver a tasty, barista-like perfectly made coffee adapted to each individual taste. When Bruvi team approached Nagarro, we all had quite the same reaction—"Why would I need an app for a brewer?"—but then it became clear. The app is an extension of the brewer experience. The machine is limited to an approx. 7" monochromatic, static display yet it's equipped with a Tuya Smart chip which provides many other possibilities such as remote control features and data collection. So the core idea isn't simply a remote control to start brewing a coffee through the mobile app when you could simply press a button in the machine, but to extend the brewer capabilities. How to turn this opportunity into a useful and meaningful experience to the customer was the big challenge in this project.
Solution
Bruvi® brewer hasn't been launched yet when I worked on this project so we didn't have much user data to work on. There were some friends and family using the machine so we relied on them and the founders in the discovery phase. After collecting data from interviews and workshops we did together, I started by sketching some ideas and created some quick prototypes to validate them. One initial idea was to redesign the remote on the mobile app, so it will adapt accordingly to the pod inserted. Unfortunately that idea didn't go through as it demanded more development time and cost, so the decision was to do a replica of the machine screen on the app. Either way we were able to do a combination of both ideas and by detecting the type of pod, the controller adapts its functionalities. Some of the main features include:
Remotely control the brewer
Schedule brews and on/off perioda
Share access to control the brewer with other users
Control several brewers with the same account
Verifying when it's time to descale
A timeline of brews and type of beverage
Average consumption per week, month or year
Detect how many pods were used and suggest to get more
The Bruvi® app has been proving to be an important differentiator for the brand and a valuable feature in the buying decision process.
Challenges
Working with IoT devices can be challenging due to the possibility of errors. It can be network, connection through EZ or AP mode, time-out or, even more common, human error. Managing all those scenarios and provide solutions to the user is the tricky part. It was an exhausting process to go through all the edge cases, creating prototypes and testing out how users would be able to resolve the issue themselves before contacting support. I have created animated illustrations to minimize the human error rate and explain how to proceed when any other error occur.
